Membership Proposal Procedure
Proposing new members is essential to achieving Rotary's goals of providing community and international service. As a Rotarian, one of your primary responsibilities is to help identify and propose new members. Below is the El Centro Rotary membership proposal procedure. - Invite prospective members to attend a minimum of three regular meetings. If the prospective member is interested, then:
- Secure a proposal card from the Club Secretary.
- Complete the form and return it to the Club Secretary. The proposal is kept confidential during the preliminary phase.
- The Club Secretary requests the classification committee to report eligibility re: classification.
- The Club Secretary requests the membership committee to investigate re: character, business and general eligibility and make a recommendation to the Board.
- The Board shall vote on the recommendation of the classification and membership committees.
- With a favorable decision by the Board, the sponsoring Rotarian and one or more member of the Rotary Information Committee informs the prospective member of the purposes and responsibilities and privileges of membership and is asked to sign the membership application.
- After receiving the signed application, the Club Secretary publishes the prospective member’s name in the Club Bulletin.
- If no member files a written objection within seven days after first publication, the prospective member is considered to be elected to membership. The Club Secretary notifies the sponsoring Rotarian of membership approval. The sponsoring Rotarian then notifies the new member.
- If an objection is filed by a member of the club, the Board will meet and consider the prospective member. The board shall vote on this matter at its next meeting. If approved by a two-thirds vote despite the objection, the proposed member, upon payment of the admission fee (if not honorary membership), shall be considered to be elected to membership.
