| Roundup Rotary Bulletin #12 for the Week of September 10, 2009 Pledge, Prayer and Song Prez Emma robustly rang the gong, an obvious signal for all good Rotarians to rise, and for the sound system to begin to behave badly. The Pledge was led by visiting past president of the Imperial Breakfast Club Cherise Alford, with prayer by our own past prez, Bob Mapes. Assembled Rotarians responded with enthusiasm to Julie Hamilton’s choir direction. Visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with Guests Ed Snively brought Jim Duggins (who eats leftovers on Friday with Kiwanis); Paul McManus brought Isabel Gomez who is working with him on the New IVC Science Building. Announcements El Centro Rotarians should remember we’re dark on October 1st, as we have a regional conference on Saturday, 11:00 a.m. here at the PAL facility. Rotary Paul Harris Foundation Gala is scheduled for November 7th at the Escondido Center For The Arts; tickets are only $70 and include dinner and a donation to the Polio Plus Eradication Program. Rosa Caro needs more Rotarians to shine for the outstanding STAR program. The Chamber Young Professionals are assisting with St. Peters & Paul 50th annual Wine tasting Gala on October 22nd, 7-10 p.m. Jim Duggins filled us in on a serious hurricane hit taken by Baja California, largely unreported in the US Media. In Loreto, where Jim runs a charity golf tournament, conditions were especially bad, with no water or electricity and little food. Jim wanted to raise some money to funnel much needed medical aid to this hard-hit area. El Centro Rotary came through with many members contributing on the spot, and additional contributions to come through our financial guys, Curt and Bob. Whining and Fining Rev. Ron Griffen was presented with a new Rotarian packet, with a quiz promised in a week. Emma welcomed back three long-lost Rotarians: Don Glud, who is retired every day but Saturday, took a neat fishing trip to Alaska. This trip and some salmon fishing cost him $50. Jack Tyler modestly acknowledged that he was the reason Tyler Insurance was named top insurance agency. His modesty also cost him $50. Bobby Brock modestly acknowledged having 861 friends on Facebook and being the most popular person he knows. Bobby was also assessed a fine of $50. Kevin Rachford modestly acknowledged having a fabulous tan, imported from LaQuinta. He too paid $50. Mike Dessert has been on the go: five soccer games in one weekend and a family vacation in Wisconsin with in-laws, along with a sojourn to the South Coast of Turkey, noting an ancient Roman amphitheatre that was in good enough condition for an Opera Season. Captain Russ Thompson bought a ticket and won twice in a row at a recent Chamber Mixer (In his line of work it’s real nice to be lucky). A $25 storage and delivery fee was assessed. The air-conditioning followed the sound-system, causing Prez Emma to remark that her ‘Right Guard had shifted left’ (more information than we needed) and she was breaking early for the program. Program Sebio Arballo introduced Coach Kevin Bird, responsible for Central High’s now successful football program. Kevin who grew up elsewhere (Tucson, AZ) had the good sense to marry a Spartan. He took the helm of the Central team in 2005 and the rest is gridiron history. He explained that he focuses on integrity and character. That, together with a 6’5” Division I prospect quarterback, wins a lot of games. Central’s competitions has improved this season, but Kevin insists Central is better, too. Take-away line: We’re Gonna Keep The Bell! Kevin introduced Jonathan Adams, President of the Spartan Gridiron Association, described the goals of his newly organized group. The association wants to supplement the budget of the Central Football Program for: athletic equipment in the weight room, football programs and training expenses, video equipment and supplies, new uniforms and football gear, medals, trophies and awards. Drawing Randy Miles, who then proceeded to reach in the magic blue bag and pull out a wisdom tooth, won the drawing. Back |
