| Roundup Rotary Bulletin #10 for the Week of August 27, 2009 Pledge, Prayer and Song The El Centro Rotary Club was opened in due form by President Emma with a loud ringing of the bell! The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Trish McNeece, the prayer given by Bob Mapes, and the song was proudly led my Christina Hoshell! Visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with Guests Danny Nuffer mentioned our visiting Rotarian, David Cason (Imperial) only because he had to! There were no guests…too hot to be cordial!?? Announcements Announcements were plentiful on this hot and humid Thursday! Bob Liggetts services are scheduled for Saturday at The Methodist Church. Rosa needs STAR program volunteers…please sign up with her. It’s really rewarding and it only takes 30 minutes a month!! (Thanks Lanny for your commitment!) Golf: we need a golf team for the 26th Tournament!! (Thank you Jeff for your time!) Lee announced that the Regional Club Meeting is October 3rd at 11 a.m. We will not meet on the Thursday, October 1, 2009. President Emma informed us that Ellie Kussman is going to limp forever and live on cortisone shots! However, she will be home early next week! Whining and Fining Whining and Fining sure was the name of Emma’s game this week! George McFaddin got popped for having been camping and having a 53rd Wedding anniversary! He also went deep sea fishing with “ol Ed and the grandkids, and didn’t even take a pole! George paid, happily $100 to Paul Harris and $100 to the Special Education Fund for his grandson, Justin. Cathy Kennerson was “accidentally” body surfing in Kauai…..cost her $45 to hike, snorkel and zip-line!! David Wells was in Montana looking at family burial sites, log cabins from the 1890’s and the oldest Protestant Church in the State. $45 was paid to the club! Well, it seems we will be having another “Rotary Annie” with Eric Freeman! Congrats to Eric for a new engagement! He may need to hold onto his $$ for his November nuptials! $100 to Paul Harris and $100 to the Special Education Fund on behalf of his Autistic brother! Trish McNeece is VERY proud of her son Patrick!!! He will be the starting quarter back for Southwest JV team and also the backup quarterback for the Varsity team! She also got Paul Harris’ started on behalf of both of her kids! $100 Patrick and $100 for Linsey! Program The Family TreeHouse by Rosie Nava Burmudez was very informative! Rosie implemented the program 10 years ago and has really expanded the efforts and goals of the overall facility! The goal of the Family TreeHouse is to inspire, promote health and prepare kids, 0 to 6 years old. It helps with developmental and social growth. There are numerous classes for kids and also adults. Great program! Drawing And of course, it’s no surprise that Bill Thomas and David Cason took the $20 from the drawing! Proposed Member Ronald P. Griffen, “Ron”, is being proposed for membership. Ron is the new Pastor for the First United Methodist Church in El Centro. Ron is married to Sarah and they have a “blended” family. Ron is a graduate of Notre Dame University and has a Doctorate of Divinity from Claremont. Ron was a member of the Daybreak San Luis Obispo Rotary Club from 2002-2006 and became a Paul Harris Fellow in 2004. Let’s all take time to meet and welcome Ron to our club meetings! In Memoriam The City of El Centro and the El Centro Rotary Club said goodbye to one of “the truly good guys” on Saturday, August 29, 2009. Bob served as the Managing Editor of the Imperial Valley Press from 1956 until his retirement in 1989. Bob was Rotary Club President 1973-1974. Bob was a poet, publisher and parent to five. He was a friend to hundreds. His wife Doris to whom he married in 1945 survives him. Back |
