| Roundup Rotary Bulletin #6 for the Week of August 6, 2009 Pledge, Prayer and Song Frank Miranda led us in saying the pledge, Jeff Sturdevant offered the prayer and Trish Burich-McNeece led us in singing God Bless America. Once again we all sang in acappella as the music refused to play. Visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with Guests Our visiting Rotarians were all from the Holtville Club. Welcome to Richard Acosta, Brooks Anderholt and Tom Storey. Announcements President Emma announced that the Month of August is Membership Recruitment month. She asked each lunch table to take a minute and ponder on why they joined Rotary. Each table shared their thoughts with each other, and finally a few members shared with the entire group why they joined the Rotary Club. Sue Giller joined as a requirement of her job, which at that time was with the IV Press. Norm joined for personal reasons because of the clubs support of the special needs program, most joined because of the service they could give back to the community. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to those having July or August Birthday’s. Veronica announced that the Thousand Smiles trip to Ensenada was planned for the upcoming weekend. It was also announced that the VOA Golf Tournament would be held in Brawley at the Del Rio Country club. Whining and Fining Past President Nancy, Don Brock and Edgar Aguilar were all called on to answer a trivia question. Past President Nancy didn’t know what animal the Canary Island was named after, no, it was not a Canary, and it was a dog. Edgar Aguilar, sleepy from late nights with his new baby, could not come up with the answer to how long the hundred years war lasted? The correct answer was 116 years. Finally, Don Brock didn’t answer correctly that Chinese Gooseberries actually come from New Zealand and are know at Kiwi fruit. These wrong answers cost each participant $25. Ellie Kussman was caught driving around in a new Honda SUV and also recently returned from a vacation to Ireland with her two daughters found that her bribe was to no avail and had to pay $100. Bob Mapes and his family took a trip to Lake Havasu where they enjoyed participating in water activities. Bob paid $50. Trish Burich-McNeece sporting a tan and looking refreshed from her stay at the beach was fined $50. Also looking good was Bill Plourd who took a family vacation to Hawaii, this trip also cost Bill $50. Program The program was a DVD of a speech by former RI President Richard King. Richard King was the RI President during the bombing of the twin towers in NYC on September 11, 2001 and he mentioned how the members of Rotary joined together and sent donations to help the people. Throughout his talk Richard noted the generosity of Rotarians worldwide and asked us to set our goals high. Richard also stated that Rotarians are usually higher educated, earn higher salaries and can reach higher goals if expectations are set to a higher standard. He gave one example of a club that was asked to raise $29 thousand dollars more than they had ever raised before and they rose to the occasion and in eight weeks raising over $100,000. Richard shared a touching story of his visit to a Rotary Water Project in Africa in which he and his wife traveled with the Rotary President for eight hours to see. There he was met by a group of young villagers who each had a brass cup, which they could fill half full every other day. Sometime later he was presented a brass cup by some of these same young men and how the cup became one of his most prized gifts from his time as RI President. Drawing The pot was won by visiting Rotarian, Richard Acosta. Back |
