| Rouncup Rotary Bulletin #4 For The Week of July 23, 2009 Pledge, Prayer and Song The fine President Emma called the meeting to order with the assistance of Liz Villalobos, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Ed Snively blessed all of the Men & Women serving our Great Country, and Cathy Kennerson entertained us with her glorious rendition of God Bless America! Visiting Rotarians and Guests of Rotarians Danny Nuffer introduced the two newest members of Imperial’s Breakfast Club, Pat Grueloff and David Cason. Chris Yeager’s guest was Dr. Ronald Griffin, the new Pastor at El Centro Methodist Church. Dan’s son Lee was also in attendance, I wonder who paid for lunch? Welcome to all of our guests. The Rotary Academy Students were recognized and none of them had the answers to President Emma’s Pop Quiz! Bobby (Brock), Bob (Hahn) Veronica (Henderson), Lily (Arambula) and Jennifer (Thomason) need to s-t-u-d-y! Announcements The President read a thank you note from Amanda Brooke and her family for the “beautiful flower arrangement” sent on behalf of her son Brandon. Madame President also gave a reminder that July is Rotary Literacy Month and to read a good book or magazine. She suggested that everyone read the Rotarian. Once again this year the El Centro Rotary club will be participating in the Volunteers of America golf tournament, which will be held at the Del Rio Golf Course in Brawley. Take out your clubs, dust them off, practice your swing and come join our tea! Whining and Fining Fines were also given to members who did not know the Rotary Theme for 2009-2010, which is, “The Future Of Rotary Is In Your Hands.” For their $25 fine they received a Rotary Theme pin. Rosa Caro got fined $50 for not surfing while on vacation in Rosarito! Julie Hamilton got pinched for $75 for having too much fun at the Kick-Out. Diane Cason has obviously hit the jackpot with a brand new car! (She ‘s had a lot of offers from high schoolers on her cute ‘lil orange bug). Hope she can make a $50 profit to pay her fine! It cost Kevin Rachford $75 to go to The Windy City for a family reunion to welcome his brother who serves in the Military! Edgar Aguilar will soon be matching the “$80 baby bucks” for his new daughter Caitlyn, born July 7th! Sergio Santos is working most Thursday’s in the San Diego “International” office…cost him $100 for the trip to south Florida! Liz Villalobos knows where to get the $50 it cost her for her bank to break out with a new logo! And finally, our own, Lee Hindman has been appointed the Assistant District Governor! Thanks Lee, we know you will serve us well! Program Donning a pink shirt that seems to now match Kevin (Rachford) pink panties… eeegad yuck! Bobby Brock the program chair introduced Queana Givens, the Language Arts Coordinator, from the Imperial County Office of Education spoke about the “Going to College” initiative and getting our local kids ready for college. The Imperial Valley has the 5th highest acceptance rate into a UC or CSU school, however they are one of the lowest in the state for retention rate. Many of the students from the Imperial Valley are college accepted, however, they are not college ready in math and English. Too many of our valley students don’t score high enough on the EAP or Entrance Exams to be exempt and need to enroll in a remedial class(s). Statistics and questions regarding our own local kids were given and answered. Very interesting! Drawing>/b> There was no drawing this week. Back |
