Rotary Bulletin #1 for the Week July 2, 2009

Pldege, Prayer and Song

As we launched into the new Rotary year and administration of President Emma Jones and her opening thoughts of “I touch the future, I teach,” Nancy Thornburg reminded us to celebrate our freedoms this holidy weekend and Danny Nuffer reminded us of the blessings of aging. When told to “tie it in a knot,” Bill Thomas encouraged Danny by saying, “Don’t worry. It’s no big thing.” For his interupption, Danny was fined $50.

Jeff Sturdevent offered the invocation, President Bob Hahn led the “Pledge of Allegiance,” and visiting Rotarian Herb Pierson conducted “God Bless America.”

Visiting Rotarians & Rotarians With Guests

We were graced with the presence of visiting Rotarians: Judy Haldeman (President of Borrego Springs), Sylvana Meeks (Area Representative, Borrego Springs), Herb Pierson (El Salavador), and Richard Acosta (Holtville). Among our crowd of visitors were the following guests: Lee Nuffer (Danny’s son) and Eugene Hoschell (Christina’s hubby).

Announcements

President Emma mentioned that she will be seeking the Club’s support for two GSE teams that the District will be sending to Ecuador and East Africa. Herb Pierson’s Rotary Club is assisting a girl with medical expenses, and El Centro Rotarians gathered $471 to help. Herb also presented President Emma with a banner from his Club. Veronica Henderson shared that CASA needs more volunteers. And, Ed Gould invited everyone to enjoy and attend the Freedom Fest on the 4th of July at IVC.

Refreshed from her trip to the Rotary International Convention, President Emma share a brief report of her experience. There were 154 countries represented at the RI Convention, and such notables as Desmond Tutu, Mia Farrow, Jane Goodall and many other great people. While attending one of the shows, Emma found an empty seat next to someone that she graduated from high school with a few years ago. And, for as much as she enjoyed the fellowship and training, President Emma gave loud applause to the local trainings and experiences that District 5340 provides for our local Rotarians. Next year’s RI Convention will take place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

In honor of our national holiday, President Emma led the Club in a patriotic sing-a-long showcasing “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “America the Beautiful,” and “This Land is Your Land.”

Fines & Recognitions

News has it that Lee Hindman is a grandpa, again. His new little munchkin’s name is Richard John Augustino Schumard, and he weighed in at 6 lbs. 14.6 oz. Lee donated $100 toward one of his son’s Paul Harris’ and the Club collected $90 for the little one. Congratulations to the whole family. Jose Guillen was in Arkansas teaching a Courts Administrator session and paid $40 for the trip. Ed Gould just returned from a cruise with his wife happily celebrating their 40th wedding annivesary to Cozumel. Ed contributed $100 toward the Club and another $100 toward his Paul Harris. Congratulations. Frank Miiranda and his wife took a trip to Portugal and visited Lisbon, Porto and the Draa Valley. After surviving his 40 km bike ride (it sounds bigger in kilometers), Frank donated $100. Welcome home everyone!

Program

Jennifer Thomason introduced our program the District 5340 Outbound GSE Team that went to East Africa earlier this year. Team members present included Team Leader Dale Barnes (La Jolla Golden Triangle), Jessica Silva from Imperial, Emily Just and Christopher Greenslate. Other team members that were unable to attend were Liza Flowers and Kellie Flandi. District 9200, where the GSE Team went is made up of 119 Clubs, 3200 Rotarians and spans 5 countries. The program was terrific, as they shared experiences from their trip and talk about the special people, projects and moments that were most meaningful to them. Group Study Exchange is supported by the Rotary Foundation, so when you contribute to your “Paul Harris” you are helping to share Rotary with the world and are without a doubt making a difference.

Drawing

Liz Villalobos and Ed Snively won the $32 pot and donated it to Herb Pierson’s project to assist with the family’s medical expenses that his Club has adopted. Thanks for your care.
