Rotary Bulletin #44 for the Week of April 29, 2009

Pledge, Prayer and Song

Our illustrious President Aaron led the pledge, Jeff Sturdevant gave the prayer and two visiting Rotarians from the Brawley club, Past President and current Assistant District Governor Tim Kelley and President Elect Sal Ortiz led us in song.

Visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with Guests

President Aaron introduced the following visiting Rotarians, Sal Ortiz and Time Kelly from the Brawley club and Cherisse Alford from the Imperial Breakfast Club.

Don Brock introduced his father-in-law Ben Jones, Bobby Brock introduced Ashley Bertussi and David Cason introduced Julie Hamilton and paid for her lunch for the last time.

Announcements

Norm Self gave the final announcement for this year’s campout. Norm reminded everyone that the train ride would depart from the Campo station at 11:00 a.m. and the roundup for the caravan would begin at 10:00 am. Norm also announced that NO alcoholic beverages were allowed at the park or on the train ride.

Jose Guillen reminded everyone to meet at the United Way building at 9:30 a.m. on May 9 for the strategic planning meeting.

Tim Kelly announced that the Group Studies Exchange team would be visiting the week of May 4 and also gave a reminded about the District Conference.

Eusebio Arballo announced that the IV Renewable energy conference would be coming up.

Kevin Rachford gave his fellow Rotarians an update on the success of the Rotarians at Work Day at the Humane Society (or as Kevin likes to call it, the “DOG POUND”) he said, “It went really well.” Approximately 40 Rotarians gathered to paint, replace part of a roof and a barrier screen. Good job, Rotarians!

Tim Kelly commented on the bad press that the Imperial Valley is receiving from papers such at the NY Times and the LA Times. The “bad press” is not good as the IV strives to bring new business into the valley.

Whining and Fining

President Aaron gave those who didn’t attend the workday a chance to either take a kitten home or pay a $15 fine. Everyone chose to pay the fine over taking a kitten home. Lee Hindman whined that he got injured and had to get a tetanus shot while Norm Self was a traitor and worked for the Holtville Club that day.

Dave Takata recently got married and took a honeymoon trip for which he happily paid a $75 fine.

Chis Yeager was fined $50 for traveling to Costa Rica for his anniversary and Johnny Sonza, who acts like a "visiting Rotarian" paid $200 toward his Paul Harris.

President Aaron welcomed Julie Harris as our newest member and immediately charged her a $50 delivery fee for her complete Rotary packet. Welcome Julie!

Program

Randy Miles introduced Shawn Rizutto, Sr. Engineer at Cal Trans. He talked about all of the transportation projects currently going on in the Imperial Valley; he oversees all construction projects here. Shawn talked about the need to have various kinds of asphalt mixtures and the compounds/composites that go into the mixtures. The Imperial Valley is one of the few, if not the only place, that has a border crossing dedicated to composite transfer across the border. Certain traffic areas call for different mixtures, depending on the type of traffic wear of cars versus trucks. Shawn also explained that in some areas the roads are rougher due to the composite mixture of the asphalt.

Drawing

Don Brock won $22. No blue chip.
